B+ is an initiative started by the European biofuels sector to drive the uptake of high blends (>10%) of biodiesel (FAME and HVO) in Heavy Duty Vehicles (HDV) in Europe.
In order to decarbonise all modes of transport, there is an urgent need for an ambitious, technology-neutral approach, that includes the use of high-blends of biodiesel. Thanks to biodiesel, every car, van, truck, plane and ship can immediately contribute to the European decarbonisation objectives. In particular, for HDVs – a hard to abate sector – there is an opportunity to increase the rate at which biodiesel is replacing fossil diesel, using higher blends.
Objectives
Our main objective is to increase demand for high blends use in HDVs through national and regional incentives by mid-2027. We are working in several ways to achieve this and our efforts are mainly focusing on:
Raising awareness among Heavy Duty Vehicle industry stakeholders on the business case for higher blends to reach their GHG reduction/ renewable obligations (national, EU, Scope 3, corporate).
Raising awareness among national authorities on the cost-effectiveness of high blends and the case for its significant contribution to difficult-to-decarbonise road vehicles.
Educating fleet operators on different types of biodiesel, compatibility with engines, comparative costs and sustainability credentials.
Gaining recognition by the EU of the benefits of high blend use in HDVs.
Events
Our efforts to promote B+ higher blends began in 2023 by promoting the 1st European B+ Summit for the decarbonisation of the HDV sector. The event was in Portugal and gathered key stakeholders across the biofuels supply chain, the automotive industry, fuel suppliers, logistics companies and distributors as well as national and European policymakers.
The 2nd edition of the European B+ Summit will be hosted in Vienna, Austria on 1-2 October 2025 and is expected to be even larger!
Main contributors of the B+ initiative are the European Biodiesel Board (EBB), the European Waste-based & Advanced Biofuels Association (EWABA) and the Portuguese waste bioenergy association (ABA).
